Bogdan Mihalcea
Bogdan Mihalcea was born on 01.01.1965 in Bucharest, Romania. He graduated the Faculty of Physics from The Universiy of Bucharest in 1989, the Technological Physics Section (1984-1989), with a Master of Science in Physics (Measurement and Control Devices). His diploma thesis is entitled Electronic system for thermostating the Hydrogen maser (Univ. of Bucharest, 1989). In 1997 he obtained the Ph.D. in Plasma Physics from the Institute of Atomic Physics in Bucharest-Magurele, with a thesis entitled Contributions to the study of transitions from chaos to order in rarefied microplasmas, under the scientific supervision of Dr. Viorica Gheorghe, ex-Humboldt fellow and the leading person in Romania in the domain of trapped ion physics, whose pioneering work and exceptional results are well known. The thesis mainly focuses on theoretical aspects regarding trapping of particles in electrodynamic traps (Paul, Penning), with an emphasize on the associated classical and semi-classical dynamics of ions. Classical dynamics of ions confined in electromagnetic traps has been described using the theory of differential equations, while semiclassical dynamics has been treated using the time dependent variational principle and the coherent state formalism for dynamical groups. B. Mihalcea is basically a physics engineer, with 15 years of experience in the domains of trapped ion physics, electronic physics, plasma physics, quantum optics and quantum physics.
